Investments in Hybrid Can Production in York Demonstrate NASP Priorities and Strategy

Michelle MachenMauser News, Small Packaging

NASP's strategy for 2025 centers on leveraging core values—Safety & Housekeeping, Quality, Productivity, Collaboration, and Openness—to achieve operational excellence and drive innovation. By adhering to these principles, the business unit aims to enhance efficiency, foster teamwork, and embrace new ideas to be positioned for continued success this year.

While NASP faces several challenges, these challenges present exciting opportunities for growth and improvement. As a result of dedication to operational excellence, the business unit has streamlined operations by right sizing the Metals franchise to ensure competitiveness and is actively reviewing the Plastic business to enhance efficiency. “Our commitment to investing in the future is evident through the acquisition of new state-of-the-art equipment for both Metal and Plastic operations, as well as tooling for new products in "White Spaces" to explore untapped market segments,” stated Bob Bourque, President – NASP.

One area where significant investments have been made is in York, PA where over the past two years the hybrid can production has been magnified to align operations with anticipated future demand.

Upgrades and New Lines Installation

The York facility has been producing hybrid paint cans in limited capacity for at least 10 years. However, a forecasted increase in market demand for hybrids spurred investments beginning in 2023 to upgrade the capacity of the existing line and the installation of a new line in 2024. The investment made to upgrade the existing line included a new layout, redundant seamers, and additional conveyors.

Before work could begin to install the new line in 2024, the facility required several upgrades. These included a new transformer and electrical system, along with equipment directly associated with the line, such as injection mold machines, testers, vision systems, conveyors, and palletizers. Once fully operational, this new line will more than double hybrid paint can output at York.
Key Features of New Hybrid Lines in York:
    • Brand new injection mold machines
    • 8 cavity molds (compared to 6 on the original line) to optimize output from a smaller footprint
    • Latest technology on tester and vision systems for quality control
    • Robotic palletizer
“Successful execution of these projects has been a total team effort from the employees in York. Everyone has played a crucial role in the upgrades and installation, contributing in various ways, whether directly involved or supporting other areas to ensure success.”

    Opportunities across our Network

To ensure consistent production and quality across our facilities, we are making similar investments in hybrid can production at our Garland, Texas location, mirroring those made in York. By sharing lessons learned and best practices from York, we aim to standardize production processes and maintain high-quality data across both locations. This collaborative approach not only enhances operational efficiency but also fosters a culture of continuous improvement and innovation within our network.
