North America Small Packaging – Plastics recently launched production of a new EZ Stor 20L container that reduces virgin material use by 50%. Developed in response to a specific customer request, production of this new container increases the use of Post-Consumer Resin (PCR) while using existing in-mold labeling (IML) machines.
Following several years of casual interest from a customer in increasing PCR use, demand increased in 2024 for a 20L pail with at least 50% PCR. “This was something we had been working on for a while, but the customer made this a priority for reaching their sustainability objectives and we were able to partner with them to develop a product that met their goals,” commented Will Pauley, Sustainability Engineer.
The new pail uses an existing design but changes the material use from 100% virgin plastic to 50% PCR in the pail body and lid. Qualification of the new pail body composition and production at 25% PCR began in 2024. After additional testing, production began in January 2025 at 50% PCR for the pail body. Change in the material composition of the pail lid with PCR and various colorants followed a similar timeframe and is currently in production. A pail handle using 100% PCR is currently in the final stages of qualification and is expected to begin production this quarter.
In 2025, the new composition is expected to use an estimated 20 million pounds of PCR annually. This represents a significant reduction in virgin material which helps reduce the carbon footprint of this product for both Mauser and the customer.
This product is being produced at facilities in LaGrange, Ga., Elk Grove Village – Lively, Ill., and Cedar City, Utah using existing IML machines. Use of IML machines in these facilities began as early as 2017. This equipment made it possible to rapidly respond to the customer’s accelerated timeline with the investment of some additional material handling equipment that was needed. “The teams at these locations, along with the engineering group, have been instrumental in running test product and ensuring that the new composition meets the customer’s existing quality standards and expectations,” commented Pauley.
