Earth Day, Every Day: Mauser’s Year-Round Commitment to Sustainability

At Mauser Packaging Solutions, sustainability is built into our foundation. As we celebrate Earth Day, we want to highlight our ongoing environmental efforts and share some updates on our sustainability initiatives.

Formed in mid-2024, the Global Sustainability Steering Committee coordinates our global sustainability efforts and initiatives, encompassing a wide range of activities such as:

Publishing Mauser’s third Sustainability Report.
Ensuring compliance with new sustainability regulations.
Coordinating reporting activities.
Collaborating with functional groups (Customer Service, Health and Safety, Operations, Procurement, etc.) within the organization to identify and set corporate sustainability goals/objectives.

We continue to tap into the ingenuity of our own people as well as work with our customers, suppliers, and industry associations to advance our sustainability agenda and develop new ideas and solutions.

Publication of Mauser’s third Sustainability Report – Coming Soon
Mauser’s third Sustainability Report will be published in Summer 2025. This report will cover our performance and achievements from 2022 to 2023 and will be available on our website. Sustainability reports reflect our commitment to corporate social responsibility and transparency, showcasing our progress and efforts to enhance the economic, social, and environmental aspects of our business.

Ensuring compliance with new sustainability regulations
Mauser is committed to responsibly adhering to evolving sustainability and climate change regulations. Our Global Sustainability Steering Committee ensures we stay informed about new or changing regulations, and we streamline compliance across our extensive network of facilities. Currently, our compliance efforts are particularly focused on new California legislation set to take effect in the coming years.

California Senate Bill 253 requires Mauser to report annual global Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions beginning next year and annual global Scope 3 GHG emissions beginning in 2027¹.

A new online tool is being developed which will enable facilities to enter data and upload supporting documentation which will simplify the data collection process compared to our historical practice of emailing spreadsheets. The Sustainability Steering Committee will reach out to facilities later this year to collect 2024 data, such as fuel consumption and electricity usage, for our Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions reporting, as well as other data related to water usage and waste management. Scope 3 reporting will include GHG emissions generated from upstream activities in our supply chain and downstream activities in our value chain which must also be calculated as part of our entire GHG or “carbon” footprint.

“Mauser has been calculating Scope 1 and 2 emissions since 2020, but this is the first time we are calculating our Scope 3 emissions, so this is a huge undertaking for us,” commented Rick Haskins, Vice President of Research and Development.

¹Understanding Carbon Footprint Emissions Reporting:

The emissions that comprise Mauser’s GHG or carbon footprint are categorized into three scopes.

Scope 1 emissions refer to GHG emissions produced directly by Mauser’s own activities at its own facilities. Examples include emissions from the combustion of natural gas and other fuels, from Mauser-owned trucks, and from on-site refrigerant leaks.

Scope 2 emissions refer to GHG emissions created indirectly by Mauser’s purchase of energy. Nearly all Scope 2 emissions are from electricity that is generated by the public electric grid and then sold to Mauser.

Scope 3 emissions are generated along the entire life cycle of the goods and services provided by Mauser. The life cycle includes both “upstream activities” in our supply chain of raw materials and “downstream activities” in our value chain of finished goods. The best examples of Scope 3 activities include production and transportation of raw materials, transportation of finished goods to our customers, and end-of-life treatment of our finished goods.

California Senate Bill 261 requires Mauser to publish a “Climate-Related Financial Risk Report” by January 1, 2026 and biannually thereafter. This report will describe how Mauser’s finances, operations, and future success might be affected by climate change.

The report will look at real-world challenges such as extreme weather events and stricter environmental rules, then explain how the company plans to handle these issues. “Scenario analysis” will be used to imagine different possible futures. By studying various possibilities—ranging from mild to extreme changes—Mauser will be able to gauge the potential impacts on supply chains, costs, and overall resilience to facilitate making informed decisions and ensure adaptability no matter how the climate change situation evolves.

Coordinating Reporting Activities
In addition to carbon emissions reporting, Mauser will pursue a new EcoVadis assessment for the entire company later this year. EcoVadis is the world’s largest provider of sustainability performance assessments in the areas of the environment, labor & human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement. This initiative will begin after the publication of our new Sustainability Report, which provides essential information for the assessment. We anticipate completing the assessment in Q3.

Collaborating with functional groups within the organization to identify and set corporate sustainability goals/objectives
While corporate-level coordination for data collection and reporting streamlines processes for our facilities, our commitment to efficiency, energy cost reduction, and sustainability is put into action every day by our operational teams. As part of our Billion Dollar Plan, we are making significant investments in infrastructure upgrades at a number of our facilities and investing in the development of product options that enable us and our customers to reach sustainability goals. A few examples include

Instillation of a new IBC Wash line at the Chicago, Ill. 38^th Street reconditioning facility that has decreased water consumption by approximately 50% and reduced water discharge by approximately 25%.
Recent production launch by NASP of a new EZ stor 20L container that reduces virgin raw material use by 50%. Learn more →
